“In Due Time” by Nicole Heinz

In dreams,

that’s when I see them burning,

rushed from hiding

All tied by invisible strings

Those lost souls

hanging from the sky

Shrouded by flames,

red and bright orange

lick skin off bones

I think to myself;

they’ve been dead a long time

The sun’s out, another day

I don’t notice if anyone’s watching,

it’s the screams that answer

Tears leak as desperation floods my veins

Cornered, I’m wounded, trapped

Because I know, finally

It’s time,

we pay at the end

No matter how abused, broken

we’ll pay the price

for the animals we’ve become

“Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.” Edgar Allan Poe
