Quick Horror Thought: “Affinity’s Window” by Douglas L. Wilson – “Even our little poor Affinity goes from a sweet soul to… to a lost one. Lost and brave. The kind of braveness you get from revenge.”

To me, “Affinity’s Window” is a complex combination of divergent emotions. I don’t like making the reviews very long (so people will actually read them) so I kept some thoughts for myself.

This book is not only a horror piece, it’s also a declaration of low feelings and guilt. You witness more than one metamorphosis along this trip.

“Peering from beneath the bed, the ruffled coverlet hanging down to a point just above her deep green eyes, Affinity Bell held Mr. Moppet before her like a cross in an unholy sacrament. He would protect her from the others. It was his vow, it was his sacred duty, and she’d paid for this service in blood. If they come inside, he will deal with them. Mr. Moppet is special. Mr. Moppet knows magic.”

Characters continuously redefine themselves by discovering emotions and memories they didn’t want to see. All of them bloom at a certain point and slowly transform the thread.

There was a scene that made me terribly sad. As a mother, I could feel THAT guilt she was experiencing and her heart breaking when she was making a fatal decision. I even stopped reading for some seconds and pictured in my mind the anguish and devastating pain she would suffer if she finally… did it.

“Tears of blood. Judas’ tears” I won’t forget it.

Could an evil entity manipulate even… your love for your kid?

“Peering from beneath the bed, the ruffled coverlet hanging down to a point just above her deep green eyes, Affinity Bell held Mr. Moppet before her like a cross in an unholy sacrament. He would protect her from the others. It was his vow, it was his sacred duty, and she’d paid for this service in blood. If they come inside, he will deal with them. Mr. Moppet is special. Mr. Moppet knows magic.”

So yes, this book is sad. Sad and deep. Even our little poor Affinity goes from a sweet soul to… to a lost one. Lost and brave. The kind of braveness you get from revenge.

“Two things happened in that moment that made Tanner Dann wish he’d never set foot in this strange old house. Wrapped in the eerie twilight darkness of the long corridor, he watched in panic-ridden terror as the door at the end of the corridor, the door they thought led to the basement, swung open on rusty hinges. The darkness behind that door was complete. It was darker than dark, blacker than black, and in that gaping nothingness Tanner beheld his doom.”

The plot becomes terrifying and grows fast and shuddering. Once you reach half of it, you won’t be able to put it down, because your levels of sadness, curiosity and anxiety are too high to just stop it.

You’ll keep some of the characters with you beyond closing the book. The best authors are those who create disturbing feelings in your mind and make it impossible for you to forget about them. I can tell, Wilson is a master at it.

“Tearing his gaze from the ominous portal, forcing himself to turn back toward the struggling Linda, he made ready to leap to her aid when the door to the den slammed shut in his face. Somewhere beneath him he heard machinery roar to life, causing a deep vibrating thrum in the structure surrounding him. Yellow light erupted from the open basement door, it’s jaundiced, festering brilliance filling the long corridor and wrapping him in its sickly glow. It was hard to breathe. Sweat began trickling down his back, and he felt his testicles shrink up inside him like frightened mice.”

You won’t regret choosing this book. I, myself, took the time to read the second half of it three times just because I loved it, and I have 23 books in line to read.

Amazing job. Congratulations.
