DARK POETRY – “The Guide” by James D. Merwin

The Guide

“I Laugh”
“And I cry”
“I scream and I yell”

“I smile”
“And I lie”
“And I do it so well”

“Sit down”
“Just relax”
“And accept what I give”

“The pain”
“And the torture”
“In this life, that you live”

“Stay close”
“Do not wander”
“Take my hand on the way”

“This path”
“That we walk”
“Is not safe, so don’t stray”

As we walk
The path crumbles
There is no turning back

I follow
I plead
With the figure in black

The figure
I follow
Has one goal in mind

To destroy
And demolish
It’s not pleasant nor kind

My guide
Looks at me
“I can not get through”

“This door”
“Must be opened”
“By no one, but you”

The figure
Steps sideways
And hands me a key

That opens
The door
That is meant just for me

The lock turns
The door opens
We step through side by side

The darkness
Pays homage
Upon seeing my guide

The Mystic
Dark figure
That leads me along

Gains strength
From the darkness
That’s been trapped for so long

I muster
The courage
To look in his eyes

They are
Chasms of pain
They are chasms of lies

The darkness
Now settles
And my guide seems to grin

“I must go”
“But don’t fear”
“I will see you again”

“I Love you”
He whispers
“And I wish I could stay”

“I am only”
“A vision”
“In your mind of decay”
