Interview with the horror writer Peter Germany

Tell us a few lines about you, who is Peter Germany?

I am pretending to be a human being that lives in a town called Gravesend, which isn’t far from London in Great Britain. I work hard during the day and try to write during the evenings and on my day off. I do live quite an uneventful life, as most people do I think.

I love a good movie and TV show, I love some bad ones too. I enjoy getting sucked into a good book, but don’t get as much time as I’d like to read.

One thing that makes me happy is seeing people following their dreams. Being a writer I know many writers and creative people and seeing them living their dreams makes me both happy and inspires me as well.

Which are your “must-have books”?

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, 1984 by George Orwell, and I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

All three of these books had a strong effect on me when I read them.

What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I am working on a post apocalyptic story that started off as a NaNoWriMo story. It’s taken a few years and drafts for it to get to where it is, but I think I’m nearly finished what I think (dear god hope!!!!!) will be the final draft.

Please, tell me about that cutie pie cat of yours.

We have a kitten called Raven, she is a very dark brown that looks pitch black. She is a parkour kitty, literally bouncing around the house like her legs are springs! She is incredibly strong-willed though, she’ll not do anything if she doesn’t want to.

Our puppy Max, loves her. Our senior kitty, Dizzy, is just about tolerating Raven (she’s not forgiven us for bringing Max into the house yet!).

Best supervillain

I think its got to be the Joker. He’s a character that creeps me out, and one who is entirely unpredictable.

Mar: I completely agree.

Best horror book

I think it’ll have to be The Silence by Tim Lebbon. I’m relatively new to Horror, having only been reading it for the last few years, and the book that has had the biggest effect on me is The Silence. I listened to it on audio and I had to stop listening at three different times because it struck a nerve with me. Definitely one I’d recommend.

Best horror movie

For me, and I’d imagine I’m in the minority here, but its the first SAW movie. That first movie in the SAW series blew my mind when I first saw it. Just the idea of being chained in a locked room, with a corpse and total stranger really freaked me out.  Looking back that’s when I first started falling in love with horror.

Have you ever read a book that changed your “life”? Like an epiphany.

Yes, when I read The Forever War by Joe Haldeman it gave me an impression of war and society that I’d never thought about before. Most of war that I’d seen before that was old World War 2 movies. With society I hadn’t really understood the idea of over population until I read The Forever War.

When I think back my view on the world changed a lot after reading The Forever War.

What are your projects?

I am working on the post apocalyptic piece, but I also have a vampire book I’m working on, and I’m in the early stages of working a YA story I’m not sharing much about at the moment. I’ve got many more which I’m in various stages with, but only a couple I think of as active.

What’s the best way of checking out your work?

I have been published in three anthologies which you can find by searching Peter Germany on Amazon.

Recommend us three books from indie authors.

Silent Dawn by CL Raven. I love this book, it’s about a trio of teenagers who play a video game which is more than just a video game.

Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo. I think Tufo is more of a hybrid author than a full out indie, but this is a fantastic zombie book that has a great sense of humour throughout.

The Human Santapede by Adam Millard. The Human Santapede was not what I was expecting. It’s the funniest book I’ve read in years and makes me smile just thinking about it.

When and how do you write?

I do write best when I have no distractions around me, some music playing that becomes just background noise, but I’ve found I can write in most environments (when I used to go night clubbing I’d be able to get some words written if inspiration took me).

I do find if I have little time then I can get more quality words written.

Favourite quote?

From Terminator 2: Judgement day:

“The future’s not set. There’s no fate but which we make for ourselves.”

This is something that I’m probably going to have tattoo’d on me one day.

What advice would you give to new/young/inexperienced writers?

Write the story. Don’t try and edit as you go. Try not to overthink what you’re writing.

A big one is, find your community. I’ve made more progress as a writer in the last couple of years since I began speaking to other writers than I have done in the previous ten. For me, it all came from participating in my local NaNoWriMo group and going to Horror Cons.

It still amazes me at how being a part of these communities has enriched my life, and emptied my bank account because all these amazing writers I’m meeting, both online and in person, write great books.
