Quick horror movie review – BELZEBUTH by Emilio Portes /Spoiler-free/ Great demonic material, a completely new perspective.

Synopsis

After a personal tragedy, a police detective investigates a school massacre committed by a student – and another massacre. Are the 3 tragedies linked to demon possession?

Starring

BELZEBUTH is the tale that narrates to us the ultimate fight between the devil and God.

Nothing like I had watched before.

Let me introduce the cast, Tobin Bell, as Vasilio Canetti, plays the role of an old priest with a deep dark past who opens the way for the rest to enter this inferno maze. You never know if he’s the good or the bad guy until the end and his acting is wonderful. I’d say that all the mystery aura in this movie comes from this particular character. Amazing.

The central character, Emmanuel Ritter, played by Joaquín Cosio is brutal. Only the way he looks is already disturbing, even at the beginning when he’s just a simple police officer, his tone is extremely dark. You would definitely keep an eye on him over your shoulder.

Priest Ivan Franco, played by Tate Ellington, is a lovely character who has some keys and looks for answers. He’s the thread line, who connects the rest of the characters and provides the information they need. And I just realised he’s Aidan Hall in Remember Me and also appeared in The Big Bang Theory!

Alright, the movie’s background is a very dark Mexico, where superstition and the fear of the diablo remain in all homes. Emmanuel suffers a terrible, terrible tragedy when his son is born. That event is where hell breaks lose for all kids in the area.

The beginning of the movie might seem a bit slow (I confess… I ALMOST left it) but suddenly the story runs shuddering. The devil makes himself physically present in a very… sensorial way. You could even say the special effects are cheesy, but if you think about it, it perfectly matches the scenario of this old, black magic-soaked Mexico.

Emmanuel swims in and out of possession, infestation and vexation, dragging the rest of the characters to a (perhaps?) terrible death, of body and soul.

Twists are continuous in the last quarter of the movie and the tale which the priest Canetti provides them with is so different from any other you have heard before.

In conclusion, I enjoyed it so much, I didn’t expect the end at all (and that’s a job well done because I’m not easy to surprise…), but you need to be patient with the first part of the movie, move slowly with them and the music-less scenes, trusting Portes and following along with the flow of the pace.

Great demonic material, full of information and a completely new perspective.

A very positive experience. I recommend it.
